For many years I have been very interested in one special musical instrument: the French horn. If you have never heard a French horn, well this intriguing brass instrument with a mellow tone. There are not small instrument. A normal French horn will be 12 feet of tubing and it is part of the bass family that include . he trumpet, trombone, French horn, and tuba. At 17 ft the longest of the brass instruments except for the tuba.

The French horn was created with of a long, spiral tube ending in a flaring bell, three valves, and a funnel-shaped mouthpiece. That is why is called a "horn" as many musicians playing classical music call this instrument.. One f the ironic things with the French horns is that there are not strictly French in origin.

The horn (is a brass instrument Modern French horns have three valves which lower the pitch a semitone, a tone, and three semitones (minor third). It became known in England about this time, and they called it the French horn. Use of the term French horn dates at least from the 17th century. Another major contribution in the 18th century was the emergence of the French horn as an orchestral instrument. The French horn produces a beautiful sound but is one of the trickiest Western classical instruments to play.

As I mention before it is usually higher than twelve feet (for a single horn in the key of F) of mostly conical tubing (like you will find in a classic tuba or euphonium), wrapped into a compact, coiled form with a flared bell. A very important characteristic of the French horn is the fact it was a very defined resonances up to the 22nd or beyond, playable up to at least the sixteen harmonic, compared to about nine playable resonances for the trumpet and trombone.

The horn plays in a well high portion of its cousins in the same musical family as compared to most brass instruments. Another characteristic feature is the funnel-shaped mouthpiece, unlike the cup-shaped mouthpieces of other brass instruments. It also allows the instrument to produce resonant highs out to about 1500 Hz, compared to low 750 Hz without hand closure. The valves divert the air through gentle and small extra lengths of tubing, thus making the instrument shortly longer and therefore deeper.

The problem with the French horn is how difficult it is to play, and that's why so many people simply don't even play such an amazing instrument. The French horn isn't the easiest of instruments to start playing, and based on this fact it's uncommon to see young people to start playing the instrument until they are at least 11 or 12 years old. Also for young people it is never easy to tune the horn, because its tuning is adjusted by slides and the instrument is tuned with the hand in the bell.

A true pity, there is nothing like the music of a good French horn.

Historical Elements Of The Flute

The flute is the oldest musical instrument to be firmly dated. The flute's earliest probable history dates back to approximately 900 B.C. They are the earliest known musical instruments and is one among the three celebrated musical instruments of India (the other two are veena and mridanga).

Flutes are of different kinds and their lengths and number of holes vary. Flutes in the baroque and early classical periods had few keys. It is a musical instrument of the woodwind group and has also always been an essential part of Indian culture and mythology. The cross flute, believed by several accounts, to originate in India as Indian literature from 1500 BCE has made vague references to the cross flute.

It made it's first appearance in Europe after having been a favorite instrument in India and China. Todays flute, thanks to Boehm, born in 1794, the son of a goldsmith, is responsible for the flute of today.

The flute is made in the form of an open cylindrical air column about 66 cm long and has a series of 16 openings in the tube wall, 11 of which can be closed directly by seven fingers and one by the left thumb.

The flute can usually be disassembled into three sections: the head joint (which includes the mouthpiece), the middle joint, and the foot joint. The flute family is also the most widespread aerophone family, with representatives in more Non-Western music traditions around the world than any other non-percussion instrument.

The instrument is held in a horizontal position with a slight downward inclination. It is played parallel to the ground on the right side of the musician. The flute is the only woodwind instrument held crosswise, parallel to the shoulders.

It is also a very versatile musical instrument, it can play solo or be responsible for carrying the melody. The flute family is a large family of instruments that includes widely-recognized instruments such as the orchestral flute and piccolo, panpipes, and recorders, as well as unusual instruments such as nose flutes and ocarinas.

The flute dropped the name 'transverse' when it became the universally used instrument of its family in orchestras, chamber ensembles and for solo works. The flute sound has fewer types of harmonic vibration than almost any other instrument, and this is the main factor in the production of its distinctive tone.

The flute, a woodwind, is atypically a metal instrument. It can be found in orchestras sharing melodies with the violin, but the flute will always be a solo instrument at its best. It is the smallest and highest pitched beginning band instrument.

It is also a member of the wind ensemble, woodwind ensemble, and the woodwind quintet, in which it performs along with clarinet, oboe, bassoon, and French horn. The flutes are the oldest category of woodwind instrument. It is sometimes called a woodwind and sometimes called a brass instrument.

Classic Rock and Kiss

For those around in the 70s, when rock and roll was really taking flight, it is most likely you remember the band KISS. Formed in 1972, this band is most memorable for its members whose who wore flamboyant outfits and painted their faces. The anonymity of the group intrigued followers along with their elaborate stage performances that included breathing fire, spitting blood, guitars that smoked and more. While these tactics may seem over-the-top today, it earned KISS over 24 gold albums and sales that exceeded 80 million.

The idea of face makeup stemmed from the band's desire to mimic comic book figures. There was the Demon, Gene Simmons; Starchild, Paul Stanley, Spaceman, Ace Frehley, and Catman, Peter Criss. Each person picked a character that best represented their personality. It wasn't until 1983 that the band members from KISS performed without makeup.

The two started a band called Wicked Lester. After recording one album, they abandoned the group in 1972 and formed their new group. Peter Criss, drummer, joined the duo and the three focused on a harder style of rock than from the Wicked Lester days. In early 1973, lead guitarist Ace Frehley joined the group and it was formally then called KISS. The idea came from Criss, whose former band was called Lips. Frehley designed the logo, making the "SS" appear like lightening bolts. Because the letters resembled the Nazi SS, a symbol illegal to display in Germany, the group changed the albums cover and merchandise in Germany to a modified logo that appears like backwards Z's.

In March of 1973 the band recorded a five-song demo tape. On November 1, 1973, KISS became the first act signed to Buddah Records, later renamed Casablanca Records. KISS first started touring February 1974 in Canada. Initially KISS sold only 75,000 copies of their album. In 1974 they recorded their second album, Hotter Than Hell. This album didn't do well either. In 1975 a third album, Dressed To Kill was released with the groups trademark song "Rock and Roll All Nite." The band continued to struggle until September of 1975 with the release of Alive!, which earned KISS a first top 40 single, a live version of "Rock and Roll All Nite."

It wasn't until the ballad "Beth" was released as a single did album sales rebound for KISS. The song "Beth" was a #7 hit for the band. After this, the band released two highly successful studio albums in less than a year, Rock and Roll Over and Love Gun. Between 1976 and 1978, KISS earned $17.7 million from record royalties and music publishing. KISS was soon named the most popular band in American in 1977.

Between sales from music and KISS merchandise, the band was bringing in millions of dollars. The group didn't peak until 1978 when Alive II the band's fourth platinum album, achieved its highest average.

Drummer Peter Criss did his final tour with the group in 1979. The band found replacement drummer Paul Caravellow, later named Eric Carr and gave him "Fox" makeup.

In 1983, sensing it was time for a change; KISS made the decision to abandon their trademark makeup and costumes. They officially appeared in public without makeup for the first time on a September 18, 1983 appearance on MTV, which coincided with the release of the band's glam metal new album, Lick It Up.

Lick It Up became KISS' first gold record in three years. During these non-makeup years, KISS struggled with their identity and fan base. Simmons, arguably the dominating force in KISS during the '70s, became less involved with the group in the '80s as he pursued outside interests; most notably, a film career. After the band's unmasking, he struggled with the loss of the Demon persona. During this time, Stanley became the driving force in KISS, as well as their most prominent member.

Though the original band members haven't played together in a while, the band is still quite notorious for all ages of listeners and an important part of rock and roll history.
